To lower that amount of dead bodies pick the surgery skill.
80% hits from bullet at low (non elite) tier unit = death. When you fight against musket army chance to lose a unit is increased. Pick up village boyz for first army (they will die frequently, but cost almost nothing). You start with sword + pistol + horse use it to gangbang some looters for free (they have 0 range weapons). Since I don't like companions I pick most of the party skills now (for now it works great).
I've picked ironflesh instantly cause you need to survive at least 1 shot from gun. Only 4 start points added to STR (+2) and AGI (+2). Since "god of war" type of play is very hard now I spec on full int mode. Example: save before fight and if you don't like how fight is going you can ALT + F4 and load back before fight. Basically you can save when you want, just enter the camp menu and leave. On character creation game ask you about to save after leave (if I understand correctly this will change autosave pattern after leaving dialog screen).
